How do you connect to your culture when you're thousands of miles away from home?

This publication explores how food serves as a bridge to culture. Drawing from my experience as someone of mixed Chinese heritage who moved to London, it examines how the Chinese diaspora adapts their cuisine—preserving traditions while embracing change—to express and maintain cultural identity in a new environment. Through interviews, recipes, and stories from the community, the publication aims to inform and celebrate Chinese cuisine.

From concept to execution, I managed every aspect of the project, from organizing interviews and writing content to designing the publication and creating illustrations.

Strategy

My goal is to help individuals—whether connected to Chinese heritage or simply curious about it—engage with Chinese culture through interactive experiences that prioritize fun and participation. By featuring traditional games, recipes to try, and hands-on activities, the publication invites readers to explore cultural traditions in an approachable, enjoyable way.

It also shares personal stories from those navigating their own cultural connections, fostering a sense of community and belonging through shared experiences with food and heritage.

Visual System

The design draws heavily from Chinese graphic design to evoke a strong sense of culture and familiarity. Inspired by the bold, maximalist style often seen in Chinese visuals, it also includes tactile elements to make the experience more immersive. Traditional pattern motifs, the symbolic use of red for luck, and a typeface with a brushstroke-like feel all add to the cultural richness.

The front cover takes cues from imported food packaging, where translated stickers are layered over original labels. Using acetate to mimic this effect, the design adds a playful, hands-on element that reflects how culture is adapted and reimagined.

Print Design

The tactile and functional aspects of the publication were designed to create a personal connection with readers by encouraging physical interaction with the content. Recipe tip-ins, with perforated edges, can be easily torn out and collected, enabling readers to recreate traditional dishes at home.

Additionally, fold-ins inspired by the Chinese almanac calendar highlight the customs, foods, and idioms associated with specific Chinese holidays, further educating readers on cultural traditions and practices.
